About Lead-Safe Schools MKE
Lead-Safe Schools MKE is a parent-led group formed in Feb. 2025 by Gold Meir School Lower Campus families, following the lead-poisoning of a student and subsequent discovery of lead dust in the elementary school building. As evidence mounted of a lead crisis in public schools around the city, the group quickly grew to include MPS parents and community members from across Milwaukee. The group’s mission is to push for lead-safe policies and to demand accountability for the safety of students and staff.
VISION
We envision a Milwaukee where our public schools are free of lead in their buildings, water, soil, and air.
MISSION
Our mission is to advocate for Milwaukee’s children to be safe from lead exposure in schools. We do that by demanding policy and system changes needed to keep kids safe from lead. We hold accountable any system that hinders, prevents, or stalls this work.
We are committed to transparency, timely dissemination of verifiable information, reliance on health science data, and a community focus. Our allegiance is to Milwaukee’s children and community, first and foremost.
Community Partnerships
The fight to protect Milwaukee residents from lead hazards goes back decades. Groups like Get The Lead Out, Coalition on Lead Emergency (COLE), Freshwater for Life Action Coalition (FLAC), and Metcalfe Park Community Bridges have been advocating to get lead out of city water and residential buildings in addition to providing community resources. Lead-Safe Schools MKE joins in this broader effort to specifically push for lead-safe policies and accountability in our public schools.
